How to get a job referral in India (without cold DMs)

An employee referral is the single best way to get your resume read at a top tech company. Referred candidates skip the pile of cold applications and land on a recruiter's desk with an insider vouching for them. The hard part has always been finding someone inside who will actually refer you. Here's how to do it.

Why referrals matter

Most large companies — Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Flipkart and nearly every funded startup — run an official employee referral program and pay employees a bonus when someone they refer is hired. Recruiters prioritise referred candidates because an employee has already filtered for fit. For you, that means a far better chance of getting an interview than applying through the careers page alone.

How to get a referral, step by step

  1. 1

Pick the company and the role

Referrals work best for a specific opening. Find the job on the company's careers page or on Refril's job board, and note the job ID or link — the employee will need it to submit your referral on their internal portal.

  2. 2

Get your profile and resume referral-ready

An employee is putting their name next to yours, so make it easy to say yes: a one-page resume tailored to the role, plus links to your LinkedIn, GitHub, LeetCode or portfolio. On Refril, your profile and resume are shown to the referrer with your request.

  3. 3

    Ask a verified employee — not a stranger's inbox

Cold LinkedIn DMs are mostly ignored because people don't want to vouch for someone they know nothing about. On Refril, you send a referral request to a company, and employees there who have opted in to refer candidates — each verified by the Refril team against their LinkedIn — review it.

  4. 4

Let the referrer submit it through the official program

Once a referrer accepts, you can chat with them. They submit your referral through their company's official employee referral portal, exactly as if a friend referred you, and upload proof that it's done.

  5. 5

    Track it to the interview

Track every step of each referral — requested, accepted, referred, interviewing — in one place. If one company doesn't work out, ask for a referral at another company or for a different role.

What not to do

  • Don't send “hi sir, please refer me” with no role, no resume and no context.
  • Don't ask for a referral without a specific job in mind — the referrer needs a job ID.
  • Don't pay anyone for a referral. Real referrals go through the company's own program and are free.
  • Don't mass-message dozens of employees at the same company for the same role.
